This is supposed to be an Asian pop music only blog, but since Grimes is a loud and proud K-pop stan who has dedicated her new music video "Realiti" to all the fans that came out for her Asia tour in 2013, I figured I could make an exception.
4minute has called their latest comeback a "reinvention," but you could also say that the girls are simply getting back to basics. They spent the bulk of their career churning out fierce, club-friendly electro-pop hits, and only detoured for one brief year to test the waters with eclectic, weirdo bubblegum like "What's Your Name?" and "Whatcha Doin' Today."
When Skrillex's "Dirty Vibe" video started playing and the camera panned out to reveal an African dude in an army helmet, my first thought was that G-Dragon was doing blackface. When I realized it wasn't him I was a little disappointed, if only for all the poor Jezebel and Salon interns that wouldn't have a new cultural appropriation scandal to hyperventilate over this Christmas.
I try to make it a point of hating almost all things YG, especially when it involves the drowsy human Jigglypuff Lee Hi or will.i.am's recycling bin G-Dragon, but I've somehow fallen in love with the Hi Suhyun unit AND that damn GD X TAEYANG.
