Selena Gomez is back! Do we care? I don’t know. Her success in recent years baffles me. She can’t sing, can’t dance, is overly serious and barely works… yet somehow she’s one of the biggest pop stars in the world. Every whispered ballad and lazy feature is platinum mega-hit. I don’t get it, but I’m not a hater. She’s just there for me.
Seemingly cleansed from her latest secret rehab stint, Selena returned this week with the first taste of her new album. I think? I say that because Selena’s known to drop a hit single before suddenly vanishing from the public eye to deal with whatever issues she’s going through in private, so don’t get too excited for a whole new record just yet.
Anyway, she’s got two new songs out. The first is one of her signature ballads, which are never any good. Imagine being the worst vocalist in pop music and deciding to be a ballad singer… I can’t. Luckily she’s compensated for that snoozer with the more uptempo “Look At Her Now”.
It was produced by “New Rules” hitmaker Ian Kirkpatrick, and you can tell. Musically and lyrically, “Look At Her Now” sounds like the softer sister to Dua Lipa’s smash. Selena’s paper-thin vocals work beautifully with the beat and are actually refreshing in an era where every second female pop star sings like a chain-smoking construction worker. She looks beautiful in the video too, but it’s hard not to laugh at the constant jump cuts designed to trick you into thinking that she can do choreography. Just because the Stars Dance doesn’t mean Selena can.
There’s so many jump cuts and camera angle changes in a certain someone’s new music video to try and trick people into thinking she can dance… pic.twitter.com/aKhGOBm5ZI
