The last two years has seen a growing trend in K-pop of creating idol groups through MTV Making The Band-style reality shows. iKANT, WIENER, SEVENTEEN, TWICE, and IOI are some of the more prominent, A-list acts to come out of these shows.
At the other end of the spectrum, you have MOMOLAND.
These girls, created by flawless hitmaker Duble Sidekick, were put together on a show nobody watched consisting of trainees that would probably struggle to qualify as first episode filler for Produce 101.
Despite their cheapness, the group’s infectious first single ‘JJan! Koong! Kwang!’ (don’t ask me what that means) is on par with the quality we’ve come to expect from Duble Sidekick hits. The playful synth-pop production, quirky beat changes and talk-rap delivery reminds me so much of ‘Supa Dupa Diva’ era Dal Shabet that I could cry tears of joy!
I’ve already convinced myself that they’re second coming of Dalegend. I just hope that doesn’t make Duble Sidekick the second E-Tribe… I’m not ready to see DS begging for food stamps just yet.
As for the rookie boys, I’m really into with Plan A’s first boy band, VICTON.
Yes, their name is terrible.
But not only are they labelmates with the iconic purveyors of purity A Pink, one of the members is also the little brother of Queen of the Silver Screen ~Actress Sunhwa~. With credentials like that, I’m ready to name them the second H.O.T!
Their debut single, “I’m Fine,” was produced by Beom & Nang, who have worked alongside Shinsadong Tiger on hits for A Pink (“Remember,” “LUV”), T-ara (“Sugar Free”) and EXID (“Hot Pink”).
Despite Beom & Nang’s varied work, “I’m Fine” is closest to one of A Pink’s bouncy, retro-tinged hits, just with a lot more oomph. It ends up sounding (and looking) very SEVENTEEN, which is perfectly fine by me since SEVENTEEN is one of the best boy bands around right now.
Speaking of SEVENTEEN, did I ever tell y’all that I went to their concert in Sydney? It was ridiculously good, and anybody who follows me on Snapchat would’ve seen me filming 10574839 close ups of Mingyu like a total creep.
Anyway, stan VICTON. And MOMOLAND. And basically every other rookie right now, they’re all so good.
