The undefeatable Namie Amuro is set to drop her twelfth studio album, _genic, on June 10th.
The album’s concept is all about how photogenic the backwards-ageing beauty is, which makes a lot of sense; Namie seems to cover about fifty magazines a week and the cheques she gets for all her endorsement deals probably makes her richer than Bill Gates.
Namie says _genic is inspired by ’80s dance music and ’90s R&B, but a teaser for one of the album’s songs sounds exactly like the kind of radio-friendly europop that filled Feel. I hope Queen Namie can stay true to her words and give us some contrived trend-chasing throwbacks instead.
I wouldn’t mind another “What a Feeling,” though.
Anyway, whatever Namie does it’s going to crush Oricon like We Got Married crushed Yewon’s career. Every Namie album since 2007 has hit No. 1 on the charts and been certified platinum or multi-platinum. Last year she had the fourth-highest selling album of the year with Ballada, and the first among female soloists.
Only the Queen.
