Good news: Katy Perry has released her best Prism track to date. Bad news: It’s another contrived trend-hopping wad of musical Miracle Whip that Katy somehow believes is original and fresh.
It ain’t that bad, though. Seriously.
“Walking On Air,” produced by Max Martin and Klas Åhlund, is another ’90s house throwback in the same vein as old club jaunts by CeCe Peniston and C+C Music Factory. It’s also got a Mariah/Whitney/Deborah Cox-remixed-by David Morales kinda vibe. A*M*E’s done this sound much better and Katy B’s done it with a lot more creativity and originality, but by Katy Perry Prism era standards, this is pretty good.
In a delusional quote about the song, Perry said, “I was like I really want to bring that authentic ’90s deep house song styling back.”
Paging Dr. Perry; this sound has been back for a LONG time already. Also, “Walking On Air” would be much better if you actually had the soul diva voice to go with it and didn’t sing lyrics like, “You’re readin’ me like erotica / boy you make me feel exotica.”
Still gonna dance to this at the gay club after a few dozen Malibus and run on the treadmill to it, though.
