Tahiti Aly & AJ

Even if you’re a K-pop fan, you might not know who TAHITI is. The six-member girl group debuted last year with a terrible single called “Tonight,” and then followed it up with the semi-decent, “Hasta Luego,” which was mostly tolerable because it sounded like Girls’ Generation’s “Run Devil Run.” Neither song charted, and it looked like a wrap for TAHITI until this week, when they made a comeback with a new single called, “Love Sick.”

And guess what? Not only did TAHITI steal Dal Shabet’s iconic “Be Ambitious” striptease concept, but they also ripped-off Aly & AJ’s “Potential Breakup Song.”

The similarities between TAHITI’s trash and Aly & AJ’s defining pop classic are so blatant that I’m expecting a plagiarism lawsuit any day now. It’s really rather shameless — even more so than when SPICA stole Girls Aloud’s “Can’t Speak French.”

Although, as expected, TAHITI’s shameless copycatting has actually finally made them kind of interesting. Seeing the girls miming, stripping, and dancing completely out of sync on M! Countdown to a crowd of disinterested onlookers was a revelation of pop-trash perfection.

If only “Love Sick” were a better song, then I might even go as far as to call TAHITI the new Gangkiz. But then again, nobody’s that perfect, are they?

  • kpopalypse

I thought “Tonight” was great. Suspended vocal harmonies with vocoder! But yeah, they’re not as good as Gangkiz. Nobody beats Gangkiz.

  • Gangkiz was flawless, despite their crappy live perfs.
this trash shouldnt even be compared to gangkiz.

  • Demi Lovato

I can literally hear Aly & Aj in my head singing their song in this song’s beat. ugh,

  • byoing~byoing.

I found myself by the chorus singing ‘YOU’RE NOT WINNIN’, TIL YOU’RE WINNING, WINNING WITH ME!’
At least they picked a good Aly & AJ song to rip off.

  • Grant Williams

Taking notes from Beyonce, I see! Good studies.

  • UncleFan

I’m mad you mentioned Gangkiz, because all I can think about now is when the hell are they coming back?!

Anyway… Tahiti sounds much improved, and (let’s be real) plagiarism only matters in grad school. Thumbs up!

    • atrapforletrice

I don’t think Gangkiz is even a thing anymore. All but two of the members withdrew from the group. And they’re associated with CCM, the same company that managers T-ara and was behind that epic flop Co-Ed School. Needless to say, I don’t see a bright future for them.

      • Josh Chinnery

I’m with this dude; CCM totally killed Gangkiz >_>

  • 364Leinad

Now that Nine Muses magically got talented after they butchered that genie rip-off in 2010, and Gangkiz is on the verge of disbanding because everyone was so mortified by their shockingly bad reception that they left the group, it’s up to TAHITI to take the throne of the trashiest act in kpop!

  • 364Leinad

It actually looks like they putting in an extra amount of effort to take the throne of the queens of trash, they way they’re blatantly plagiarising Aly & Aj and DALshabet.

    Their desperation is nauseating.

  • Bluebeat

    They’re called 78violet now.

  • Laurence Nope

I’ve become a bit of a fan and Tonight was amazing, actually. I don’t like how they pronounce their name like “tighty” though.

Also, you missed covering one of the year’s biggest K-pop events this week when “Techno Queen” Lee Jung Hyun came back for the first time since 2010 with a song that’s like Romanian Eurotrash crossed with Narsha’s witch pop, with surf guitars and a Starships pre-chorus, and a video directed by Oldboy director Park Chan Wook.

    • Trust me I haven’t forgotten it, it’s been on my to post list since it debuted, I’ve just been extra busy and have family visiting. Was going to post it tonight but will prob do it tomorrow now.

    • Josh Chinnery

I usually hate stuff like this (horror is not my thing), but I loved this video XD And the song ain’t half bad, either

    • 364Leinad

I personally thought this was a great song lol!

  • 364Leinad

Even if Lovesick was actually a good song and didn’t have all the plagiarism issues as well as being absolute trash, I sincerely doubt they would stand a chance making a comeback at the same time of the Brown Eyed Queens

  • Johnnyyy

That’s just ridiculous. Can’t they be sued for doing that?

    • Josh Chinnery

Since this isn’t a case of just a recycle chord progression and full on plagiarism, yes they can

  • Gon├žalo Fernandes

Well…the good thing is it made me want to listen to the original again so that’s a plus! But the live performance…try again :-/

  • Josh Chinnery

You do realize that you can recycle chord progressions without completely ripping off a song, right? Like seriously, this is really sad -_-

    This is just sad.

  • Lee James

Yes, Love Sick DID remind me of Potential Breakup Song a lot, before I had even read this article. Potential Breakup Song is one of my favourite ever music videos (mainly because of the VFX).

  • emi

These bitches plagiarized Aly & AJ.. those girls are my childhood. I LOVED THEM!!

  • Nicole Naeun

No thank you, this is plain bad. The way they sing it with that aegyeo shit…..

  • Bruno

U mad with TAHITI having a good song? Girls Generation does the same thing and you love them

  • vjx89

Wow. The first verse of the song is exactly the same as “it took too long, it took too long for you to call back”. Lawsuits filed in 3,2,1…

  • Liz

To be honest I liked both songs even though it is very similar as least they didnt plagiarized it as much as La Materialista with 2NE1s song I am the Best. That girl stole the whole freakin song.

  • KingBeaArthur

This song would have been amazing if they had the vocals to pull it off.

  • ONIT

Does anyone actually own the Tahiti release and looked for the listed writers? It clearly must be an authorized cover, just like the Japanese cover of the song by Ami Suzuki.
