Norwegian pop princess, Annie, almost became a Robyn-sized star back in the mid-2000s thanks to two awesome semi-hits, “Chewing Gum” and “Heartbeat.” Her next big thing buzz died after her 2004 debut, Anniemal, failed to take off commercially, but she’s continued to release a steady stream of consistently excellent pop tunes over the years, which has kept her relevant as a popular blog staple with regular appearances on Popjustice and Pitchfork.
Annie’s latest venture sees her re-teaming with underrated British pop producer, Richard X, for a cleverly-titled joint record, The A&R EP. It doesn’t drop until August 5, but lead single “Back Together” premiered online yesterday, and you probably don’t need me to tell you that it’s totally great.
Annie’s glacial voice shimmers and shines so perfectly over X’s electronic-disco production that it’s like a match made in heaven. “Back Together” is propulsive and housey enough to party hard to at the club, but far too pretty to pass out to after a bad pill. Save that mess for Erika Jayne’s guilty pleasures.
