Like most online indie-pop acts, it’s hard to find any detailed info on Only Girl. Some digging around on Google tells me that she’s female, her real name is Ellen Murphy, she’s from London, she fancies herself as a combination of Mariah Carey and the ethereal Cocteau Twins, and she was once in a punky pop-rock band.
Ellen now goes by the moniker Only Girl, with a less-is-more approach to marketing herself that matches the minimalism of her music. Her first single, “End of Time,” falls in with the ambient alt-pop of The xx, or a less experimental James Blake. What makes Only Girl different is her big voice, which cuts through the moody trip-hop in a way that her contemporaries chopped & screwed whispers do not.
Still, as far as hipster pop goes, Only Girl’s sound is a little “been there, heard that,” but I’m interested to see where she’s going to go next.
