It looked like promo for Fiona Apple’s The Idler Wheel… album had officially wrapped up last year after the tragic death of her pet pooch, Janet. The album’s been out for over a year now with only one music video released to date, and as usual, Fiona’s been completely out of the spotlight. Now, seemingly out of nowhere, she’s gone and dropped a music video The Idler Wheel’s spunky closing track, “Hot Knife.”
Thank you, god.
The clip stars Apple’s talented sister, Maude Maggart, and was directed by her A-list ex, Paul Thomas Anderson, who was behind major films like Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and There Will Be Blood. He also shot a handful of old Apple videos, like “Fast As You Can” and the gorgeous, “Paper Bag.”
“Hot Knife” is an odd choice to receive The Idler Wheel’s second visual. It’s the most musically different song on the album, and never received any live promotion like “Anything We Want” or the Tidal-esque “Valentine” did. But it’s for those reasons that “Hot Knife” will get more attention than anything else Apple could’ve made a music video for — minus, perhaps, “Dull Tool,” which would’ve charted somewhere had it been promoted properly during the release of This is 40. It also should’ve scored a Best Original Song nomination at The Academy Awards, but that’s a whole nother story.
Anyway, is anyone else happy to see how healthy Apple looks compared to how she did during the press rounds for The Idler Wheel…? This is the most deliciously alive she’s looked since the Extraordinary Machine era.
You go, girl!
