When Kylie Minogue put a pin in her retirement plans to sign with Roc Nation, I was a little worried. Would Jay-Z and his incompetent cronies bog the kween down in a bunch of lazy Rita Ora b-sides and torpedo her into irrelevancy from lack of promotion? Thank Godney, no. The ink was barely dry on the contract before Roc Nation kicked Kylie’s pre-comeback promo campaign into gear, first by having her court the fashion press by showing up to every major red carpet event imaginable, and then following up with the release of a fabulously skeezy buzz single, “Skirt.”
Penned by The-Dream and produced by rising EDM star, Nom De Strip, “Skirt” is both quintessentially Kylie and brand new territory for the pop diva. The new Kylie is hipper and harder-edged, and for the first time in a long time, you shouldn’t feel super gay just for listening to her.
The official “Skirt” remix EP dropped this week, and the shit is bananas. The lighting fast GTA mix is the standout with its stabby synths and rabid aggression, but the groovy funk of the Switch mix isn’t too far behind.
Mah gawd, I’m so excited for Kylie right now. She’s working with Pharrell and Switch actually remixed her song! Kylie hasn’t been this fucking kool since screwed Michael Hutchence and collaborated with Nick Cave in the ’90s.
