DEVolution MNEK Admire

MNEK’s been giving us epic ’90s-tinged house jams all year. There was Duke Dumont’s “Need U (100%),” Rudimental’s amazingly sexy “Baby,” and now my barely legal baby daddy is at it again on DEVolution’s “Admire.”

Who’s DEVolution, you ask? They’re two British dance music dudes who are in no way affiliated with Dev, the crappy female talker from America. The first guy, Pete Devereux, gave my teenage self life as one half of Artful Dodger (“Craig David all over your…!”). I don’t know who the other guy is, but I’m sure he’s great.

Artful Dodger was a staple on the UK music scene in the late ’90s, but their star had faded by the time the mid-2000s rolled around. Now that the ’90s is back in fashion, 2013 is the perfect time for a comeback. “Admire,” the first single from DEVolution’s forthcoming debut EP, Transition, is wobbly modern house with a distinctly old-school garage flair. MNEK An unnamed guest vocalist makes two appearances, momentarily stepping in to sing against a ghostly backdrop of air and keys before DEVolution returns to drop the beat. His voice is a lush mix of romance and melancholy, and it leaves you wanting more every time you can’t hear it.

Good tune, but give us MNEK, please.

Update: Was informed by MNEK that he only wrote this, but did not sing on it. The person singing is an impostor who just sounds like the King.
